The reckless progress of generative AI (artificial intelligence) is inducing severe emotional turbulence into the creative industry. Among the countless new questions and concerns it brings, mine is this: can generative image AI, a category of tools (or artificial agents), that offers endless static images for our amusement, be used and shaped as an artistic medium in animation and related arts? A medium much like oil paint, clay, or photography, a form that holds artworks content and message. If yes (certainly so), then how? If traditionally the animator is a master illusionist, imbuing life into static objects, and through static materials, using the tricks of frame-by-frame motion, then what does this process look like when having access to a machine of seemingly infinite visual memory?These questions pull me into a rabbit hole of technical and artistic research topics that turn into an online blog - an alternative, ongoing format for a thesis that aims to be more educational, accessible, and varied. In the worst case, the result is neither a good academic thesis document, nor a good online blog. However, the goal is to get the best of both worlds, and continue the research, blogging, and related artistic practice post graduation.My research questions eventually bring me to the notion of “piloting” AI models, specifically - “Stable Diffusion”. To pilot - is to have meaningful, direct artistic agency over the generative AI, to steer it frame-by-frame in an explorative manner, or to a destination, always facilitating active dialog between it and the animator behind the “wheel”. Finally, this inspires me to prototype my own software toolkit and experiences to interface with Stable Diffusion in such a way - leading to the blog, the toolkit in question, and the graduation film all being titled “Diffusion Pilot”.
